Shamator, August 4 (MExN): Quality education, access to medical care, road connectivity and water scarcity were key problems faced by people of Shamator. These four issues emerged during the one day workshop on ‘leadership and community development’ held at Shamator on August 4.

The workshop was organised for the leaders of Shamator area by Yimkhiung Liberü Arihako Shamator Area (YLASA) in collaboration with North East Network (NEN), stated a press release. YLASA is a women rights organization under the Yimkhiung Women’s Organization. NEN is a women’s rights organization working in three northeastern states of India- Assam, Meghalaya and Nagaland. 

Wekoweu Tsuhah, State Coordinator for NEN Nagaland was the resource person for the workshop. Tsuhah facilitated the session topics including who is a leader? Understanding Community Development, and building a sustainable and resilient community. Using participatory methodology, participants identified community concerns, formulated ways of addressing and solving the issues most pertinent to them. Tsuhah emphasised on community participation, collaboration and accountability.

She maintained that leaders are not necessarily people in position of power but that everyone is a leader. She stressed on the fact that communities and societies are built up of a diverse group of people and that a leader has to understand the various needs of its people. Tsuhah maintained that every citizen has their rights and entitlements, and in order to secure them, it is important to be aware of one’s rights and engage with the proper authority.  The welcome address was delivered by Toshila, President, YLASA.
