A press release stated that the celebration of world breastfeeding week included quiz and discussion hour for nurses and doctors with presentation on ‘Benefits of breastfeeding’ by Dr. Akumtoshi, Treasurer IAP Nagaland and Consultant Pediatrician & Neonatologist, Zion Hospital & Research Centre followed by presentation by Dr. Apong Longchar, Joint Secretary IAP Nagaland and Consultant Pediatrician & Neonatologist, Nikos Hospital & Research Centre on ‘Role of nutrition in digestive comfort in infancy.’
Dr. Tokuho Chishi president IAP Nagaland gave the welcome address and CME was chaired by Dr. Wapang Imchen, General Secretary, IAP Nagaland and the interactive session moderated by Dr. Deepak Jain, Vice President IAP Nagaland.
The celebration ended with a positive note but stressed on the importance of exclusive breast feeding for at least six months which can reduce infant mortality rate by about 19% according to lancet. Breast feeding also reduces the chance of diarrhoea, pneumonia and allergic conditions in a high percentage of children. With the use of milk products other than breast milk, children are exposed to high risk of ischemic heart diseases, hypercholesterolemia and even conditions like leukemia as they grow older. Not only does breastfeeding provide health and well-being benefits for mother and baby, but it is also good for our environment. Breastfeeding is a sustainable resource that is produced and delivered naturally.
