WSSU asks telecom service providers to improve cell and internet coverage

DIMAPUR, OCTOBER 1 (MExN): The Western Sumi Students’ Union (WSSU) has appealed to telecom providers to immediately resolve the issue of poor network and internet connectivity.

A press release from the WSSU said that cellular network and internet connectivity, especially in the rural areas and villages has been poor. This, it stated, has caused immense inconvenience to the student community.

It noted that as an immediate measure to stem the spread of COVID-19, most educational institutes have been shut since the end of March 2020. Schools were directed to communicate with students through virtual lectures or portals with massive open online classes/courses. However, it said that in the absence of physical classrooms, both the teachers and students are facing unprecedented challenges, one such being poor network connectivity.

The WSSU added that the quality of services offered by telecom services/operators (especially internet connectivity) over the months has failed to see improvement. The union informed that it has received numerous complaints from distraught parents and students on the issue pertaining to poor network services.

It urged the telecom companies to immediately take action in rectifying the situation and provide services up to the standard where students can study through the internet and also attend online classes without interruption.

The WSSU further cautioned that failure to do so would compel it to take further necessary course of action for the welfare of the student community.
