Hekani Jakhalu, Founding Director, YouthNet today beseeched students and youth to take life very seriously considering the tremendous competition in the job market these days.
Speaking as the guest speaker at the Biannual Fresher’s Meet cum Felicitation Programme of the Dimapur Sumi Students’ Union (DSSU) on the theme “Shaping Vision” at IMC Hall on September 27, she reminded that according to the 2011 census, there were 8 lakhs people in the 15-35 age group in Nagaland, meaning that the students are “are not competing against your classmates, against your friends, or your village alone but you are competing against 8 lakhs people.”
Jakhalu lamented that while students have a degree, they were just not ready for the market, and urged them to make use of the current internet age wisely. She encouraged the students with five basic tips for life namely: to set a goal for oneself, to think positive, to come out of their comfort zone, to never quit when there’s a setback, and to have role models in life.
She further encouraged the gathering that the most crucial part of these 16 to 17 years of education will determine the next 50 years of one’s life. Jakhalu encouraged the Sumis to be good ambassadors for the Sumi community, and not to depend on outsiders alone for one’s wellness or livelihood.
She reminded the gathering that “without God as our foundation, everything else will fail” and concluded by urging all the individuals to have God as the foundation of one’s life.
Special invitee, Andrew Ahoto Sema, Chairman, Livingstone Foundation Higher Secondary School enlightened the gathering not to be just takers, but givers to the society, citing an example of the Dead Sea which only receives, while the River Galilee is thriving with life when both get fed from the same source – River Jordan.
He further exhorted the students to be always honest and hospitable in life—traits for which Nagas were known. Citing another example of the giant redwood tree that survives for about 3000 years due to its root spreading over 100 feet, connected to hundreds of trees like a network, he exhorted Nagas to be united, hardworking and rooted with character. He concluded by saying that there’s more in giving than there is in taking.
