Young people called to promote clean electoral practices

Kohima, July 4 (DIPR): Deputy Chief Electoral Officer, Nagaland, Vekho Vero, appealed NCC campers, at Kohima Science College on July 4 to promote the Systematic Voter Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) for clean electoral practices.  

While addressing the campers, he said that the SVEEP was constituted by the Election Commission of India in 2009 and Election department of Nagaland have also been actively campaigning over the years in collaboration with the government departments, media and NGOs to achieve the Commission's goal of increasing electoral participation through voter registration and turnout increasing qualitative participation in terms of ethical and informed voting and providing continuous electoral and democracy education to the people.  

The Election Commission expects the young people to play a significant role in the cleanup of the electoral system but he stated that, according to Nagaland Census 2011, only 16.43% in the age group of 18 to 19 years are registered in the electoral roll. He exhorted all those who are eligible to register and also appealed to the NRIs to register names through submission of duly filled Form-6A in the electoral roll of their Indian native' permanent home assembly constituency with concerned Electoral Roll Officer (ERO) in person or by post.  

He informed that a Special Drive will be carried out in July to enroll those who have not registered and focus will be on 18 to 21 years age group. Youth Voter Festival will also be held from September 4 to 8 in university campuses and higher education institutes where activities such as seminar on complete electoral participation by university and college students, essay writing competition and student's visit to district headquarters, VRECs will be conducted.
