Seminar on career guidance and skill development for youth held

A one day seminar on career guidance and skill development for youth was held on July 21 at LCS Building Kohima. Organised by Kohima Chakhesang Students’ Union in collaboration with the Department of State Institute and Rural Development (SIRD), the resource speaker for the seminar was Dr. Kedise Pucho, Sr. Lecturer, SIRD.
With the job hunt in the 21st Century becoming competitive, Dr. Pucho advised the young students that they cannot settle for mediocrity in studies or skills, and must adapt to marketing system in changing conditions of the global village.
“Fancy degrees are not enough to ensure a job, one requires experiences and skills,” said Dr. Pucho who encouraged the students on develop hard power skills such as vocational knowledge, practical professional ability and aptitudes along with one academic credentials. Further, the need to learn soft power skills such as personal branding skills such as persuasiveness, communication agility, relationship building, self promotion, leadership and strategic networking, problem solving and creative skills were also emphasized.
Focusing on the private sectors, Pucho highlighted the job opportunities in private sectors such as hotel management, airlines, Private companies and markets, motor companies, bank sector.
Despite the booming technology and progress, poverty is also growing, viewed Dr. Pucho who expressed that progress and poverty are moving along in parallel. “Unemployment has led to a lot of poverty in households. If employment is not distributed properly then poverty will persist,” stated Dr. Pucho.
Quoting verses from the Bible, Dr. Pucho emphasized that without vision, people perish. “One must be conviction driven. There is no limit to over-learning, practice until its perfect. You must have the ability to adjust to change,” said Dr. Pucho while encouraging consistency and honesty in work. While there are limited jobs in the government sector, Dr. Pucho highlighted the free trainings provided by the government in tertiary skills in the Industries Training Institute (ITI) in Nagaland.
Aren Aier from Pinnacle Skills also spoke on the trainings and available job opportunities of the organisation. The programme was chaired by Nüvolü Kezo, Treasurer while the welcome address was delivered by Viewolo Koza, General Secretary.
