Members of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC), Manipur on Tuesday carried out a protest rally in Imphal here over the LPG price hike.

LPG price was increased to Rs 858.50 per 14.2 kg cylinder from Rs 714, which was the steepest hike in rates since January 2014.

Members of Uripok branch of Mahila Congress also joint the rally organised by Imphal City unit of IYC and marched on the street at Iroishemba area of Imphal.

Among others, the rally was participated by IYC secretary (in charge Manipur), Sarifa Rahman, president of Manipur Pradesh Youth Congress, Amir Hussain.

During the rally, some protesters carried empty LPG cylinders while others carried placards.

The protesters demanded immediate rollback of the LPG price while raising anti-Modi and anti-BJP government slogans.

Talking to media persons at the sideline of the protest, Sarifa Rahman alleged that the steep hike in LPG price is an attack on the household budgets by the Modi government.

“The Modi government is electrocuting household budgets with the sudden, steep and dramatic increase in the price of the cooking gas cylinder,” he said. “Economy of our country is going to dogs, GDP growth is consistently dropping, while inflation is touching the sky,” he further said. He then added, "Not only the price of the cooking gas but also prices of essential commodities are also increasing".

Joining the nationwide protest, women Congress workers in Manipur had also staged a protest outside the party office in Imphal on February 13.
