In a noble gesture, a youth group in Artang Ward under the name – Mobocracy – in commemoration of its 25th anniversary constructed and formally handed over a Public Announcement tower to the Artang Ward Yimten here today at the Artang Community Hall. Mobocracy, which was formed by nine young people of Artang Ward, Mokokchung, started off as a ‘male voice band’ way back on December 19, 1992.
During the formal handing over of the Public Announcement tower, a group member Ongchi Jamir said that the group (or band) was formed during their young days when rock music was a trend, and at a time when they were young and hotheaded. However, as they grew up, their friendship grew stronger, their ideals matured and today, after twenty-five years, the group members have become responsible citizens of the ward, and ventured to give something back to the ward in the form of the PA tower, added Ongchi.
The PA tower, which is erected at the Artang Community Hall ground, is forty feet in height, has three loudspeakers, a state-of the art amplifier and microphones. The whole project which cost about Rs 1.5 lakh was constructed through collection from the group members.
Speaking on behalf of the Artang Ward Council, Chairman Rongsenmonba termed the gesture of the group as ‘a remarkable, memorable and infrastructural tower’ and at the same time expressed deep happiness for initiating such a noble work for the Artang Ward people. He added that the Artang Ward Council and the citizens will forever remember the excellent works of the group and encouraged them to continue their good work for the greater development of the colony. Speaking on behalf of the Artang Baptist Church, Deacon Dr Mapu termed the initiative a good example for others to emulate. He also said that the PA tower would benefit not only the Artang Ward Yimten but also the church since the tower is located just adjacent to the community hall.
Ward elder and leader, Lima Longkumer, expressed appreciation on behalf of the parents of the ward. He further encouraged the group members to continue their good works since it is not only setting a good example to others, but also contributing towards the beautification and development of the ward.
The tower was dedicated by Artang Baptist Church - Child Education Promoter, Atula.
It may be noted here that Artang Ward is one of the oldest wards in Mokokchung Town and it has produced a lot of prominent citizens in the town. The Mobocracy group foundation day was scheduled for December 19, 2017, but had to be preponed due to some unavoidable circumstances.
