Youths trained to be Peer Mediators

Dimapur, June 28 (MExN): Under the theme, ‘Transformed by Peace to Transform the World,’ the Peace Channel conducted a two days ‘Passion for Excellence’ summer camp at St. Paul School Phesama village on June 21 and 22.   All together there were seventy eight students along with seven teacher animators of the different schools during the two days camp, informed a press release from the organizer.  

The objective of the summer camp was conducted was to mould the peace club members as peace activist even when they are out of the school environment and make them learn and understand the concept of Peace, Conflict, Peace Building, Peer Meditation and youth as a peace builder in the Naga Society, it said.  

The Founder and Director of Peace Channel Dr.Fr. C.P Anto along with the Kohima District coordinator Susan Kulnu, Soham Vaidhya, and Garollotha, district coordinator of Dimapur was the resource person, it added.  

During the event, students were taught on “Peer Mediation” which stressed on making the Peace Club members understand the importance of peers in their lives, making them familiar with the concepts of peer educator and importance of peer education in their day to day lives and the importance of a third neutral party to efficiently solve a problem.  

“Peer-Mediation is a problem or conflict solving by youth with youth. It is a process by which two or more students involved in a dispute meet in a private, safe and confidential setting to work out problems with the assistance of a trained student mediator or a facilitator,” the release informed.  

The students were also taught about finding peace through transformation and reminded about the Rick Warren’s quote that, “It is journey of discovery- there are moments of mountaintops and moments in deep valleys of despair.’  

During the valedictory function, Dr. Anto congratulated the participants and their parents for opting to stand for peace, and for deciding peace the way of their life.  

Putting forward the primary objectives of Peace Channel, he said of creating an empowered youth who can lead the society in a better way.  

Dr. Anto also called upon the participants become future peace builders, peace activists and peace makers in the North East India.  

Some of the methodologies included were: Group activities consisting of peace games and other activities centered on leadership skills, the release further informed.  

Talent show programme were also conducted to explore and showcase their talents and healthy group competitions among the quality peace club members from six different schools, it added.  

A Peace Hour for universal peace was also observed during the during the two-day camp.
