DIMAPUR, DECEMBER 22 (MExN): Ngwalwa Village hosted the 63rd General Convention cum Election of the Zeliang Students' Union (ZLSU) on December 21, bringing together students and leaders in a display of unity and cultural pride. The event focused on addressing critical issues for the advancement and identity of the Zeliang tribe.
The convention featured Keyirangding Hegui, NCS, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Peren, as the guest speaker. In his address, Hegui highlighted the significance of protecting the Zeliang tribe's cultural heritage, language, and traditions, which he described as fundamental pillars of its identity. He urged the youth to embrace modern educational opportunities while upholding these values.
Hegui emphasized the importance of safeguarding ancestral land, noting its dual role as a source of livelihood and a testament to the tribe's rich history. "The identity of the Zeliang tribe is intricately linked to its land and culture. Losing either would mean losing a part of ourselves," he said, calling on Zeliang intellectuals to preserve their heritage while striving for excellence.
A key highlight of the convention was the election of new office-bearers for the 2025–2027 term. Conducted with fairness and transparency, the election reflected the union's commitment to democratic principles. The newly elected leaders pledged to prioritize education, cultural preservation, and socio-economic development for the welfare of Zeliang students and the broader community.
The program began with an invocation by Lungleuhingbe Iheilung, Deacon of Ngwalwa Baptist Church. Outgoing president Kingsalt Hegwang delivered a presidential address, recounting the achievements of his tenure. The event included a musical performance by Pauramyile Pame and concluded with a vote of thanks from former General Secretary Sanlak Namdaw and a benediction by Heilamying, Associate Pastor of Gaili Baptist Church.
The ZLSU expressed gratitude to the Ngwalwa Village Council and the Ngwalwa Students' Union for their support and hospitality. The union also acknowledged the efforts of individuals who contributed financially and in kind to the event's success.
Appreciation was extended to the outgoing leadership team for their dedication and sacrifices in advancing the student community. The union offered its best wishes to the newly elected team as they take on their responsibilities.
