DIMAPUR, FEBRUARY 16 (MExN): The Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) has paid tribute to Rani Gaidinliu on the eve of her 32nd death anniversary, urging the Zeliangrong people across Assam, Manipur, and Nagaland to honor her legacy and recommit to her unfulfilled aspirations.
In a statement, the ZUF described Gaidinliu as a beacon of inspiration whose struggle for the rights and dignity of her people continues to resonate. The group reaffirmed its commitment to carrying forward her vision and the movement she sustained throughout her life.
Rani Gaidinliu, a revered freedom fighter and former president of the Zeliangrong People’s Convention (ZPC), was honored by successive Indian governments with awards such as the Tamrapatra Freedom Fighter Award in 1972, the Padma Bhushan in 1982, and the Vivekananda Seva Award in 1983. She has also been commemorated through postal stamps, commemorative coins, and various institutions and infrastructure named in her honor.
The ZUF, however, emphasized Gaidinliu’s long-standing call for a unified administrative structure for the Zeliangrong people, quoting her words: “Until and unless the Zeliangrong people are under a single administrative roof, we shall not rest.” The group asserted that until a political solution is reached, her vision of self-governance will remain their enduring pursuit.
ZUF Chairman S. Kamson called upon the Zeliangrong people to observe the day with solemnity and respect, stating that reaffirming their commitment to Gaidinliu’s cause would be the most fitting tribute. He also appealed for the temporary closure of traditional village gates, centers, offices, businesses, and institutions for at least half a day across the three states as a mark of respect.
