Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) on Tuesday asked truckers and other transporters not to bring ‘non-local’ people to Manipur.

The concern of the JCILPS came in the backdrop of recent alleged attempt to bring in ‘non-local’ people by some Imphal-bound trucks ferrying goods along NH-2 which was reportedly busted by police.

Talking to reporters here, JCILPS Convenor YK Dhiren said that committee has reports from various sources that truckers and transporters are bringing in non-locals into the state by concealing them in their vehicles.

The bringing in of the non-locals was amid the suspension of issuance of ILP for the time being as a part of precautionary measures to prevent spread of COVID-19 in the state, he said.

Dhiren then urged all truckers and transporters plying on national highways not to bring in non-local people to the state amidst the panicky situation and lockdown triggered by COVID-19.

He said that JCILPS acknowledged the role being taken by the truckers and transporters in shipping essential commodities from outside the state in such prevailing critical situation.

However, the committee will not tolerate if any of the truckers indulged such act of bringing in unknown non-locals who can be either COVID-19 positive or negative.

The truckers and transporters must not sideline the prevailing crucial situation for petty personal gains, he said. They must think of the possible disastrous for Manipuri society, Dhiren further said.

Stepping up its preventive measures for spread of COVID-19, the state government had suspended issuance of Inner Line Permits as well as all inter-state passenger services ahead of the country-wide lockdown.
