Several villagers of the Chilpara area under Kharkutta police station in North Garo Hills district have written to Deputy Commissioner (DC) SC Sadhu, seeking a stop alleged illegal movement of coal, stones and broom vehicles moving through the village road into the neighbouring town of Dudhnoi in Assam.

The villagers under a society named Chilpara Centre Development Committee (CCDC) have written to the DC seeking action in stopping the movement of such vehicles. The area falls under the purview of the Dainadubi outpost under Kharkutta police station.

CCDC comprises members of nine villages around Chilpara including Chilpara Reserve, Tengasol, Ansalipara, Mendima Rabha, Bolmedam Akaro Gittim, Lower Bolmedam, Upper Bolmedam and Asim Bolmedam.

The complaint by the villagers was submitted on March 2. In their complaint, the villagers stated “Rampant vehicles, including mini trucks and normal trucks are moving through the Amerim – Kentra – Tengasot – Dudhnoi route.

Despite several complaints against such movement, the vehicles continue to use the route to transport coal, sand, rocks and broom sticks through the narrow village road.”

It said that these vehicles were using the route to bypass the Dainadubi Checkpost as the transport of coal and other minerals have been stopped by the Supreme Court.

“It is an alternative route for them to reach Assam by bypassing the various checkpoints near the Assam – Meghalaya border,” they added.

The villagers further added that the road between Amerim – Bajabeta was the lifeline for the people around these villages but these huge trucks were destroying this lifeline.

“The roads are already in a dilapidated state and these trucks and dumpers are actively deteriorating it further. Repairs on these roads take place once in a lifetime, hence the immense problem that we face,” they said.
The CCDC appealed to the DC to instruct district officials to put a check on the alleged illegal movement of vehicles for the welfare of the harried villagers.

The DC, SC Sadhu, could not be contacted for comment on the matter.
