Meluri, September 9 (MExN): The 10th Edition of the Pochury Black Day Memorial Cup 2024 officially began in Meluri Town, with John Tsulise Sangtam, Deputy Commissioner of Phek, serving as the Special Guest.
This year’s tournament features 19 competing teams. The opening matches saw intense competition, with Immortals FC narrowly defeating Wukhroreü FC 1-0. Anyuwi FC also secured a 1-0 victory against Comets FC, while Matikhrü Youth Club won 2-1 over Christian Higher Secondary School Meluri, setting the stage for an exciting tournament ahead.
In his keynote address, Sangtam emphasized the importance of unity and collective effort, encouraging the community to strengthen their bonds and collaborate harmoniously.
The ceremony commenced with a warm welcome from Rongley Leyri, President of the Pochury Students’ Union, who expressed sincere gratitude to all attendees. Khriesamhalie David Mere, President of the Angami Students’ Union, and Pfhülo Sara, President of the Chakhesang Students’ Union, also extended their greetings, highlighting the spirit of cooperation among student communities.
A standout moment of the event was a lively performance by Khrutachu Jourü, whose song energized the crowd and athletes alike. Students from S. Pethüry School, Meluri, further enriched the occasion with their vibrant performance.
R. Atathu Thurr, Village Chief of Phor Village, delivered the Solidarity Note, reflecting on the historical context of the Pochury Black Day and the 1960s events that inspired the memorial tournament. The programme was chaired by Savithsü Nyuthe, with Rev. Fr. Tomy Kallurumbell, Principal of St. Xavier Hr. Sec. School, Meluri, offering an invocation prayer.
