The 13th edition of the Luke Sasong Memorial Volleyball Trophy 2024 commenced on Wednesday, August 21, at the Multi-purpose Sports Complex in Mokokchung. Organised by the Luke Sasong Sporting Association (LSSA) under the aegis of the Mangmetong Students’ Union, this biennial tournament is being held under the theme ‘Unity through Sports.’

The tournament features 12 teams from Mokokchung, Kohima, Wokha, and Dimapur, competing in a league-cum-knockout format. The teams are divided into four pools, with three teams in each pool. The competition offers a cash prize of Rs 70,000 for the winners, Rs 40,000 for the runners-up, and Rs 10,000 each for the two losing semifinalists.

Individual awards of Rs 5,000 each will be given to the Best Spiker, Best Setter, and Player of the Tournament.

Imtipokyim, President, Mokokchung District Volleyball Association (MDVA), inaugurated the tournament as the guest of honor. In his address, he commended the LSSA for its significant contributions to volleyball in the region, nurturing numerous talented players. He emphasized the importance of commemorating Luke Sasong’s legacy through this tournament, urging participants to showcase true sportsmanship and athletic excellence. “As you battle it out on the court, may your skills and teamwork shine in every match,” he encouraged the players.

The tournament kicked off with a thrilling match between defending champions MH-10 Kohima and their arch-rivals, Changtongya Volleyball Association. MH-10 Kohima emerged victorious with scores of 25-21 and 28-26, a repeat of the final matchup from the previous edition in 2022.

During the event, Yutensangla Imchen, the program’s compere, provided a brief biography of Luke Sasong. Born on September 9, 1913, in Mangmetong, Luke Sasong was a brilliant student and leader, renamed by his missionary-teachers due to his qualities resembling those of St. Luke. He was an active Christian preacher and a prominent figure in Naga society, known for his sharp intellect and leadership.

Despite his promising future and significant contributions as a Naga student leader, Ao Students’ Conference president, and freedom fighter, he passed away at 27 while pursuing his BA. His short life left a lasting impact on his community.
The tournament is set to conclude on August 23, with high expectations for intense and competitive matches leading to the finals.
