The 19th Lt. Imtitemjen Memorial Table Tennis Tournament, organized by the Mokokchung District Table Tennis Association (MDTTA), commenced today at the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex. The two-day event, held on the September 23 and 24, features 40 participants competing in four different categories. The winners will represent Mokokchung district in the upcoming Inter-District Tournament, scheduled to be held in Kohima in October.

The event began with a welcome address by the President of MDTTA, followed by a speech from the special guest, Imtiyapang Imsong, Treasurer of the Nagaland Table Tennis Association (NTTA) and Councillor of Mokokchung Municipal Council.

In his address, Imsong expressed his gratitude to the MDTTA and the family of the late Imtitemjen for organizing the tournament. He emphasized the significance of table tennis as a sport that is well-suited for the people of Southeast Asia, pointing out the physical advantages it offers to the region’s players.

“While we may not be able to compete physically with athletes from other regions of the world, table tennis is a perfect game for us,” Imsong remarked, encouraging players to dedicate themselves to the sport with discipline.

He also urged table tennis players in Nagaland to strive for participation at national and international levels, highlighting the importance of achieving national-level certification, which can lead to better career opportunities.

The event continues tomorrow, with the final matches set to determine Mokokchung’s representatives for the NTTA organized tournament next month.
