The first edition of Imonungba Memorial Nagaland Open Volleyball Trophy organized by the Changtongya Volleyball Association (CVA) and powered by Lenjeter, Monthly Ao Magazine got underway at Public Ground, Changtongya Town on November 8. The tournament ends on November 10. 

Imnatiba Jamir, MLA & Advisor, Industries & Commerce, Labour & Employment, Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Government of Nagaland graced the inaugural function as the chief guest.

Jamir in his address said that Nagaland is a small state with a small sized area and small population however, it has many issues. He remembered a time when Changtongya town was very popular for games & sports and music, and also a time when it was a “problematic place with too many underground factions residing in the town.”

He stated that things changed sometime after 2003 after Rio came to power. He also stated that the present government is trying its best to promote sport by constructing astro turfs in many of the districts and encouraging the young people to participate in national level tournaments. 

He spoke on how volleyball as a sport is very popular particularly in Changtongya and how it is helping in bringing people together and uniting them in one spirit. He thanked the organizers and all supporters for their endeavors and for bringing happiness through sports.

Renbemo Humtsoe, Technical General Secretary, Nagaland Volleyball Association (NVA) during a brief exhortation thanked the CVA for inviting NVA and said that not many associations invite the NVA when tournaments are held in various parts of Nagaland. 

He said that next to football, volleyball is perhaps the second most loved and played game in Nagaland and that it is played very popularly in the Ao region. He informed the teams gathered at the tournament that the NVA open Volleyball championship will be held on November 16 and 17 and encouraged all teams to participate at the tournament.

Earlier, Short speeches were delivered by Tiasunep Lkr, Chairman, Changtongya Village Council and a member of late Imonungba’s family while Imkongsanen, CVA President gave the welcome address.

The volleyball tournament is being organised by the CVA in memory of late Imonungba Jamir who was an ace volleyball captain from Changtongya Volleyball Team with his specialised position being left attacker. He had participated in various important tournaments all over India including 24th National School Games Autumn Meet (NSGAM) 1978, Srinagar; 25th NSGAM 1979, Guwahati; 29th NSG Winter Meet 1983, Bilaspur; 30th NSG Winter Meet part-1 1985, Aizawl; 33rd National Volleyball Championship 1984 - 85 Kanpur; All India Congress youth Rajiv Gandhi Trophy, May 1983, New Delhi (played for Nagaland team); CKT Team Captain in All Nagaland Open Championship Cosmos Trophy 1982 and Rising Club Changtongya Team captain in the same Cosmos trophy in 1983 and won both the trophy.

11 teams in 4 pools are participating in the first edition of Imonungba Memorial Nagaland Open Volleyball Trophy. It is played in a league cum knockout format.
