Nerhema village showcased organic products through 1st Nerhema Organic Day-cum-Khuvie Nyi 2024 on August 30 at Nerhema village under Kohima district.

Initiated by Nerhema Women Organization (NWO), this event raised awareness about the benefits of organic farming and inspired many cultivators to adopt organic methods of growing various crops including Allium chinense (Khuvie). This trend represents a positive shift towards more sustainable and health conscious farming practices and also caters to the growing consumer preference for organic produce, the organiser stated. As per available data, varieties of crops planted this year (2024) by Nerhema villagers included; Allium chinense/Khuvie-2495 bunches, Ginger (Viitshii-Viitho)- 5994 kgs, Tree Bean/Yanchak- 1103 trees, Papaya/Kopita-1807 trees, Banana/Thayie-1954 plants, Orange/Shiihuo-1137 trees, Michinga/Ganya nyii-1280 trees, Persimon fruit-1465 trees and Avocado-1983 trees.

Organizing committee member Riikravolie Riilho told The Morung Express that the event aim to promote organic products and commercial farming.

The festival also aims to help boost the rural economy through sustainable farming practices.     

Vibeilietuo Kets, Special Assistant to Chief Minister Nagaland, graced the festival as the special guest. Kets shared is experience in farming and coffee plantations.

He encouraged the younger generation to get involve in farming, which, he said offers gainful employment and income generation.
Kekhrieletuo Yhome, District Agriculture Officer, Kohima also graced the occasion as the guest of honour.

He assured that the agriculture department is there to assist the genuine farmers to scale up the agricultural production.

Earlier, the formal programme was chaired by Dr. Kruolalie Tsiirho, member organizing committee while organizing committee convenor Khrielie Usou delivered keynote address. Nerhema Baptist Church pastor Rev. Vilanyii Usou prayed for the event. Vote of thanks was proposed by Riikravolie Riilho.

The event featured exhibition cum sale of Khuvie, vegetable leaves (variety), Yam, Pumkin, Various Gourds, Ash Gourd, King Chilly, Fresh Chilly, Maize, Bamboo shoot, Cucumber, Banana, Jackfruit, Persimon, Papaya, Local Rice (Packing), Sticky Rice, traditional attire goods, handicrafts etc.
