21-day winter school on strengthening Mithun value underway in ICAR-NRC

MEDZIPHEMA, JANUARY 16 (MExN): The ICAR - National Research Centre on Mithun (NRCM), Medziphema inaugurated its ICAR-sponsored 21-day Winter School titled "Farm-to-Fork Approach for Strengthening Mithun (Bos frontalis) Value Chain and Doubling the Income of Tribal Farmers of North East India."

The program, running from January 16 to February 5 aims to address critical aspects of Mithun value chain development, empowering tribal farmers of Northeast India through innovative strategies.

The inaugural function was graced by Dr Suresh S. Honnappagol, Former Animal Husbandry Commissioner, Former ADG (Education), and Former Vice Chancellor, Karnataka Veterinary, Animal, and Fisheries Sciences University (KAFASU), as the chief guest. 

In his address, Dr Honnappagol emphasized the significance of enhancing the Mithun sector's value chain and praised the active participation of women in the Winter School, urging them to leverage this unique opportunity.

Dr H Kalita, Head of Regional Centre, ICAR-NEH attended as guest of honor. He highlighted the importance of integrating local knowledge with modern scientific practices to create sustainable Mithun farming systems. Dr Nagappa K., Associate Professor and Head, KVFASU, Hassan, Karnataka, also attended as a resource person, sharing his expertise on livestock value chain management.

Presiding over the function, Dr Girish Patil S., Director of ICAR-NRC on Mithun and Course Director of the Winter School, provided an overview of the Mithun sector in India. He emphasized the pivotal role of Mithun in tribal livelihoods and its potential to contribute to the economic upliftment of tribal communities. 

DR Patil outlined the Winter School's objectives, focusing on knowledge dissemination across the entire Mithun value chain, from production to market linkage, and stressed the importance of capacity-building initiatives for tribal farmers.

A total of 22 participants, including 12 women, are attending the program. They represent 12 disciplines across six different states of India, ensuring a multidisciplinary and inclusive approach to the discussions. The program will cover diverse themes, including Mithun husbandry, feed and fodder development, disease management, reproductive technologies, processing, and marketing strategies.
