Nagaland claims 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze Dimapur, July 21 (MExN): The 5th North East Zone Shooting Championship 2017 was held at the Assam Regiment Centre (ARC) Shooting Ranges, Happy Valley, Shillong, Meghalaya from July 15 to 20. Organized by the Shooting Association of Meghalaya and co sponsored by the North East Council and the Directorate of Sport and Youth Affairs, the shooting championship was conducted by the National Rifle Association of India. Altogether, 211 shooters – 148 men and 67 women – participated in the Championships with the youngest participants being a 10 year old boy and a 10 year old girl. 15 new records were set in 11 matches. Manipur topped the medal tally with 18 gold, 13 silver and 10 bronze, while Assam with 16 gold, 11 silver and 6 bronze came second. Meghalaya claimed 6 gold, 7 silver and 9 bronze, while Mizoram claimed 5 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze. Nagaland came away with 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze while Services (Army) bagged 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze. Merang Jamir of Nagaland bagged the 2 gold in 50meter Small Bore Free Rifle Prone National Rule (NR) & International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Veteran Men Individual. Rimkung Warmila Chote bagged 1 silver and Sharda Bardwaj claimed 1 bronze in 10meter Air Pistol Women Individual. 25meter Standard Pistol shooters Metekhrielie Mejura and Imkongmeren were also invited for further training by Bhaba Kalita, ISSF Judge. A total of 53 shooters qualified for the 61st National Shooting Championship Competitions, New Delhi. The next 6th North East Zone Shooting Championship 2018 would be hosted by the Mizoram Rifle Association at Aizawl, Mizoram.
