A Story of Five Fingers: A Reflection On Naga National Movement

There was a beautiful Golden Ring. All the five fingers decided to take it as a common property for common welfare and glory. However, in the process to collect the Golden Ring, ism and selfishness crept in, which destroyed their unity and a quarrel began among themselves wanting to take the Golden Ring for itself. Hence, they all attempted to get it for its glory. Anyway, the thump attempted first and followed by others. The thump attempted with all the possible means to collect the Golden Ring. However, it could not take it as a single finger. With much tiresome it went back. Then the Pointing Finger took opportunity trying to take the Golden Ring. However, in spite of trying many times, it could get it and returned back. Now, the King Finger thought that it was its golden chance to take it. With much confidence, it tried with all the means and ways, yet it failed. With much frustration it returned back. The Ring Finger said, “it is my birth right to wear the Golden Ring and I would take it.” So it to take it, yet it could not put the Golden Ring into its finger, because it was alone. So it came back with much regret. Now the Little Finger took opportunity to attempt it. With strong determination it went thinking that it would be easy to put the Golden Ring into its finger. Yet, it also failed.

All the fingers attempted with its best means. But they all failed because there was no support and help. Then they all realize that one finger alone cannot put the Golden Ring into its Finger. So they decided to own the Golden Ring as a common property for common welfare and glory. As they attempted together, it was easy for them to grasp it and wear it for common welfare and glory.

The Naga National Movement began with a common consensus to attain independence. However, in the process of struggles, ism and ideological differences and groupsim crept in destroying not only the unity among the Nagas, but also human life and economic life too. It was just like a self-defeat movement of the fingers. We need to forget the past differences and realize that an attempt of a single faction would not bring any solution, because we need support and help from all the corners of the Nagas. The Naga National Movement is for the whole Nagas. As the Fingers reconciled and moved together, it was easy to possess the Golden Ring for the common good. It would also be easy for the Nagas, if we reconcile and move together to attain the desire goal of the Nagas.
