KOHIMA, APRIL 19 (MExN): The All Nagaland College Students' Union (ANCSU) has appealed to the State Government to reconsider and revoke the absorption order of 147 contractual teachers under the Department of Higher Education, citing procedural irregularities and rising concerns among aspiring candidates.
In a letter addressed to the Minister for Higher Education and Tourism, the Union acknowledged the contributions made by contractual teachers over the years. It however expressed concern that the mode of appointments made in contravention to the laid down rules and regulations has led to an outrage from the aspirants.
The ANCSU highlighted that the number of contractual teachers has steadily increased since 2009, to the extent that they now make up nearly one-fifth of the regular teaching staff in government colleges.
Against the backdrop of the New Education Policy (NEP) and the introduction of the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP), the Union stressed the urgent need for the creation of sanctioned posts and recruitment through open, competitive processes.
The Union had earlier submitted a representation in October 2022, urging the government to address the faculty shortage and initiate proper recruitment mechanisms in line with policy requirements.
While acknowledging the critical role played by contractual teachers in sustaining academic activities, the ANCSU maintained that any long-term solution must ensure justice for aspiring candidates and uphold the sanctity of academic institutions.
Calling for the immediate involvement of all stakeholders, the Union appealed for an amicable resolution that prioritizes student welfare and institutional integrity. It reaffirmed to stand steadfast in delivering justice to the students and the aspirants at any cost, while ensuring the wellbeing of the colleges as well.
The ANCSU has therefore urged the concerned authority to address the issue on top priority, and let justice prevail, in the greater interest of one and all.
