Ahuna Festival celebration in Zunheboto culminates

Zunheboto, November 14 (MExN): Advisor for Food and Civil Supply, Legal Metrology, K Tokugha Sukhalu has called the people of Sümi community to respect their heritage and embraces changes brought by modernization. Speaking at the culmination of Ahuna Festival, organised by Sümi Hoho at Public Ground, Zunheboto, he highlighted Zunheboto’s rich legacy, noting that it is one of Nagaland’s oldest districts after Kohima, Mokokchung, and Tuensang, having been established in 1973. 

Sümi Hoho Media Cell, in a press release stated that, the advisor iterated that with progress, some traditions will evolve, but the core values of honesty, hard work, generosity, courage, and community must remain intact. He also emphasised on the importance of remaining united and cautioned against misinformation while having commitment for community growth anchored in faith.

The three day culmination event saw Advisor Sakhalu as the Ahuna Papu (Ahuna Father). Sukhalu spoke about the community’s agricultural roots, as Ahuna celebrates harvest and dignity of labor. He challenged attendees to reflect on what they are cultivating today as a tribe and to ensure that future generations benefit from their efforts. He further called the support of the community for schools and uphold high standards in education.

Earlier, Dr HS Rotokha delivered a speech on the significance of Ahuna, resonating with the theme of cultural pride and community.
The programme was chaired by Sümi Hoho Vice President, Kikheto Muru and Ahuna Festival Convenor, opened with a prayer of blessings by Pastor Kughavi Chishi, Nagaland Christian Revival Church, Zunheboto. Sümi Hoho President, Dr Vihuto Asumi gave the welcome address, and Ahuna greetings were conveyed by Sümi Kükami Hoho President, Akükau Hetoho S Zhimomi. 

Special musical performances were presented by Ahuna Singing Star 2024 Champion Joshua Shohe and Runner-up Tonani Obeto Chishi. A mass choir featuring Cornerstone HSS and Immanuel HSS, cultural presentations by Bloomfield HSS and Olympic HSS showcased the diverse traditions of the region. Area-wise cultural item competitions were held in categories including Anguküpüsü, Kakapu, Apüküxa, Aküghütsa, and Avighi Sünhe.
