Dimapur | February 14
On February 12, Rs 10 lakh in cash was confiscated by the Income Tax (IT) from a passenger at the Dimapur airport. It was initially suspected to be linked to the elections in Nagaland. Two days after the incident, details emerged claiming that the impounded cash was not linked to the elections. The individual from whom the cash was confiscated was reportedly travelling to Manipur and that the cash was meant for the construction of a residential house.
Income Tax sources told The Morung Express that the individual claimed the cash was borrowed money for building a house. According to the official, the individual could substantiate her claim by providing details about the source and purpose of the money. “She is a salaried individual with earnings of over Rs 2 lakhs per month. She could provide (substantiate) the source of the money,” the official said. The details of her income indicated that it was within her means to be able to borrow or have in possession such an amount, it was added. The official informed that the cash will be released after completing necessary IT proceedings.
As per Election Commission of India norms, when the Election Model Code of Conduct is in effect, citizens carrying more than Rs 50,000 in cash are required to carry relevant documents to substantiate the source and purpose of the money. Banks are also required to report daily to the Election office on suspicious withdrawal of cash.
