In continuation of its educational tour conducted last year, the All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) on Saturday announced it would go ahead with its effort to incorporate job-oriented courses in the syllabi of higher education in Nagaland and featured the related matter as one of the major points of focus during its forthcoming 14th Biennial General Conference beginning August 26 in Dimapur.
Talking to mediapersons here at the NSF Conference Hall, ANCSU president O Wati Jamir recalled that ANCSU had came out with some findings during its educational tour, and stressed on the need to change the present education system in higher education by incorporating job-oriented courses in the syllabi. He said that around 5000 students graduate every year and they are compelled to look for only white-collar jobs due to the absence of major industries or “worth naming” private firms to accommodate the unemployed educated youth in the private sector.
Viewing this trend with seriousness, ANCSU felt the need to have vocational courses in colleges in Nagaland so that the youth can be encouraged to go for self-employment ventures. The ANCSU president cited an example where Patkai Christian College introduced a vocational course on music thereby enabling many students to choose music as their profession with many of them doing extremely well.
ANCSU has chosen ‘Education: a tool for self reliance’ as the conference’s theme, where Neichute Doulo, CEO of Entrepreneurs’ Associates, and Vipralhou Kesiezie, Director for SCERT Nagaland, will speak on the related topic on entrepreneurs and government perspective respectively. The Union also set aside the debate topic as ‘The present education syllabi is making as more self reliant’.
Basing on the inputs from resource persons, discussion and debate during the conference, the resolution committee is expected to come up with some recommendations. ANCSU had earlier submitted a representation to the state government suggesting the inclusion of job-oriented course in the syllabi of higher education as the need of the hour.
We still need to a lot of consultations from wide range of educationists, said the ANCSU president, and at the same time invited constructive views and comments from the general public. Also commenting on the need for job-oriented courses, ANCSU general secretary Keneingulie Sopfunuo said the Union desires to have more study on this, saying, “We need to have a thorough discussion.” He also stated that the 14th biennial general conference would not be just a conference, but a meaningful one.
Referring to the election of a new team of council of executives scheduled for August 28, Medo Chirah, ANCSU’s election commissioner, said that it would constitute an electoral college where 37 units would elect the new team. “This time we will strictly stick to the constitutional provisions,” he said and at the same time conveyed that he was hopeful to have a peaceful election.
Organizing committee convenor Lima Akum informed that 1080 delegates representing 52 affiliated colleges in Nagaland would be joining the conference. This time, he said, the conference is a bit different from previous, as the Union will be felicitating the toppers in the degree examinations of 2009 (Art, Science and Commerce streams). Debate and duet will also be part of the conference. Preparation is going on in full swing, he added. Karaibo Chawang, convenor of the Publicity Committee, was also present at the press conference.
ANCSU’s 14th Biennial General Conference, commencing from August 26 at Sakus Mission College (New Campus), Dimapur, will be inaugurated by Home Minister Imkong L Imchen as the chief guest. Chief Secretary Lalthara, IAS, will also grace the conference as guest of honour. Dimapur DC Moangwati Aier will be the introductory guest, and Prof. K Kannan, Vice-Chancellor of Nagaland University the special guest. The conference will also witness short messages from NSF president and Er. T Saku Aier, chairman of SM College. The Conference will end on August 29.
