AR seizes areca nuts worth over 3 Crore

DIMAPUR, JUNE 19 (MExN): The Assam Rifles has informed that its troops seized areca nuts worth Rs 3,45,00,000 in two separate operations on June 18 and 19. 


A press release from the PRO, HQ IGAR (N) informed that troops of Assam Rifles seized contraband amounting to Rs 3 Crore at Oriental Colony on June 19. The AR along with police representative launched an operation in Oriental Colony, Dimapur and on searching a suspected Godown, 1550 bags of areca nut amounting to Rs 3 Crore was seized. One Lalan Kumar was apprehended.


The apprehended individual alongwith recovered items was handed over to Assistant Commissioner of Custom, Dimapur for further investigation.


In an earlier operation on June 18, the AR recovered Rs 45.3 lakh worth of areca nuts at Ghaspani while it was being transported from Manipur to Dimapur.


AR troops established a Mobile Vehicle Check Post in general area Zubza and Lalmati on NH 29 and during spot check of vehicles, two trucks were intercepted carrying 135 bags of areca nut amounting to Rs 45.3 lakh. Three individuals were apprehended and handed over to Custom (Preventive) Division, Dimapur along with the recoveries for further investigation.
