Assamese community holds prayer on Rongali Bihu eve

Dimapur, April 13 (MExN): Marking the beginning of seven-day Rongali Bihu and Assamese New Year, the Assamese community of Dimapur observed Goru (cattle) Bihu at Dimapur Namghar Monikut (sanctum sanctorum) with nam kirtan (prayer service) on Wednesday morning.

  The first day of Rongali Bihu is dedicated to Goru (cattle), as cows and bullocks provide the people with means of livelihood. Dimapur Namghar Monikut Committee in a press release stated that men and women, young and old offered prayers at Namghar seeking God’s blessings.   The Assamese people will celebrate Manuh Bihu ('Manuh' symbolises "Elders") tomorrow. Womenfolk prepare special dishes made of flattened rice, jiggery and sweets are prepared on this day and offer to the guests. People of all faiths and creed celebrate Bohag Bihu by singing traditional Bihugeets and performing Bihu dances.
