The Angami Students' Union (ASU) on Thursday announced it detected at least 8 ‘illegal immigrants’ and hundreds with no valid permit during a vigil checking on September 11.
The ASU, in this connection, has written to the Deputy Commissioner expressing shock and anguish over what it alleged as lackadaisical action of the district administration in properly implementing the Inner Line Permit regulations in Kohima, which has constrained the union to take remedial measures.
"On learning about reports of the influx of illegal immigrants into the district, the union exercised a vigil check on September 11, 2024," the union said.
An ASU official, meanwhile, informed The Morung Express that the checking could cover only some portion of Kohima. During the day long vigil check, it detected 8 illegal immigrants and hundreds with no valid permit.
After the checking, the union said it reported the matter to the law enforcing agencies and the defaulters are now in the custody of South Police Station, Kohima.
Additional SP and PRO, Kohima Police also confirmed that a case has been registered against 8 defaulters under relevant sections of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita and subsequently forwarded to judicial custody.
The ASU also attached the list of defaulters and urged the district administration to effectively implement ILP regulations.
In a separate statement on surge of ‘illegal immigrants’ issued by the ASU, it said that this problem is causing social unrest and undeniable threats to the Naga people particularly in the districts of Kohima, Dimapur, Chümoukedima and Niuland.
"While acknowledging the cordial co-existence of the various communities in our homeland, it is also imperative to abide by the regulations governing the state for the safety of its people," the union maintained.
On this, it expressed univocal supports to the demand of the Naga Students' Federation for effective implement the ILP regulations in the state and implement the same across the districts of Dimapur, Chümoukedima and Niuland.
The ASU further appealed all citizens to extend cooperation and support to protect our people from influx of illegal immigrants.
Towards this, it has asked house owners, landlords, business establishments, hotels/lodge, guarantors and citizens in Angami inhabited areas, not to entertain any individual without proper ILP at any cost.
Such entries should be immediately reported to the district administration or the office of the Angami Students' Union. That any individual executing works apart from the permitted purpose of work/visit and residing with invalid permit should be immediately reported to the district administration or the office of the ASU, the union instructed.
