Autonomy is freedom to excel says Shishak

Dimapur, Feb 2 (MExN): Dr. TA Shishak, Principal Emeritus today expounded on the meaning of autonomy as the freedom to excel in academic and working for the right cause of society. He was speaking during the inaugural function in honor of autonomy status accorded to Patkai Christian College. He termed the Patkai Christian College as a newborn baby beginning today and that within five years time; PCC must prove its new found status to the UGC. He stressed on the continuous struggle for Patkai’s autonomy since 1980s and “today as we are blessed, it is our first responsibility to perform to the highest degree”, he said. He also mentioned that Margaret Tuisem Shishak, his wife developed the first western classical music in Nagaland and PCC is the only college in the country to offer a degree course in Western classical music. 

While expressing his happiness on the momentous status conferred to one of NU’s affiliated colleges, GD Sharma, Vice Chancellor, NU said that the college has enormous potential to grow as a Deemed University considering the special course of western classical music offered in PCC. The professor added some historical background to the grant of autonomous status and highlighted on the changes required in areas of Higher Education in today’s context to become one of the developed countries. For this, he said that the necessity of more autonomous colleges is required. 

“A day to remember as most remarkable in history of the college”, said Principal Judson Rungsung.  Judson in his welcome address extended gratitude to all who had supported the autonomy recognition of the college and said that it had boosted the morale of the Patkaians. “It is a moment of humility to accept the new challenge”, he said. He also highlighted the history of the autonomy accredited to the college beginning from the inception of the idea by founder principal Dr. TA Shishak. Various awards and certificate of research were conferred to members of the college for the outstanding performance and service rendered towards the college. Margaret T Shishak was conferred with the most distinguished service award. 

Today’s inaugural function witnessed a huge attendance of officials and dignitaries besides the board members, faculty and students of the PCC and well wishers. A special dance twist with Elvis Presley’s medleys was presented by BA I students. The college chorale presented a special song led by K. Chishi while scripture was read by Kolezo Chase, Vice Principal. The programme was invoked by Rev. Candid Sareo, benediction by Dr. Wati Aier, Principal OTS while vote of thanks was delivered W. Kithan, Chairman, PCC.
