Awareness & training on practices on organic ginger cultivation held

Medziphema, March 3 (MExN): All India Co-Ordinated Research Project on spices, Department of Horticulture, SAS, Nagaland University organised training on organic ginger cultivation at Medziphema village and Punglwa village on February 15 and 16. 

Resource person, Dr Graceli I Yepthomi, Assistant Professor (Spices) highlighted the importance of spice cultivation, potentiality and organic management practices of ginger. She also encouraged the farmers to integrate spice crops along with their traditional crops to enhance income as well as to maintain the fertility of the soil. 

During the training programme, growers raised problems in respect to pest and disease problems and market linkage due to which the produce were unable to sell at good price. 

Project In-charge, Dr. C S Maiti assured the farmers to extend help and find out solution to link national market for selling surplus quality produce during the harvesting season. Storing of seed rhizome was one of the problems raised by ginger and turmeric growers as a result of that, they are unable to get quality seed materials during planting time. 

After the training, tools and inputs were distributed to 60 farmers and resource person explained procedure and uses of the materials.
