Kohima, February 23 (MExN): The Department of Political Science, Baptist College, Kohima, organized a talk on "Women and Politics" on February 22 at Rivenburg Memorial Chapel Hall, Kohima. The event aimed to promote discussions and awareness about the importance of women's participation in politics
In keynote address, L. Thsidilong Sangtam, Head of the Department of Political Science, emphasized that women's participation in politics is crucial for strengthening democracy and unlocking the full potential of society.
He highlighted the challenges faced by women in politics and stressed the need for male counterparts to support and empower women by removing barriers and breaking cultural stereotypes.
Addressing the gathering as the resource person, Rüvuotuonuo Ruth, Councillor, Chiephobozou Town Council, talked on women's participation in global politics and their contributions in pre- and post- independence India.
Ruth also highlighted the challenges faced by Naga women, including customary laws and practices that discriminate against them.
Despite these challenges, Ruth emphasized the significant role played by Naga women in maintaining peace and stability in society.
She also stressed that women's participation in politics goes beyond just contesting elections; it also involves being informed voters and choosing candidates who can bring positive change.
She highlighted recent developments in Nagaland, including the 2018 turning point when female voters outnumbered male voters.
She attributed this shift to the increase in women's literacy rates.
Ruth also mentioned the 2023 Assembly Election in Nagaland, where two women won seats for the first time. Additionally, she highlighted the 2024 ULB election, where 33% of seats were reserved for women, and 102 women won.
The event concluded with a call to action, encouraging women to participate in politics and men to support them.
The talk was attended by students and teachers of the political science department from Sechü and Kohima campuses.
The programme was chaired by Imtisenla Mokholee, Assistant Professor, Kohima Campus.
Kevichüse-ü Agnes, Assistant Professor, Kohima Campus, invoked God's blessings.
