Biodiversity conservation event

Dimapur, February 18 (MExN): Akimbo Society in collaboration with Nagaland Pollution Control Board and Ministry of Environment and Forest, New Delhi carried out National Environment Awareness Campaign Programme (NEAC 2013-2014) at Niuland Town on February 17.

Biodiversity conservation in the context of people living in rural areas was the main theme of the programme, stated a press release. Project Director and staff of Akimbo Society and the resource person Immuksungla carried out the programme. The resource person shared on the importance and need of biodiversity conservation because biodiversity provides things that are fundamental to health, like clean air, fresh water and food products. She also spoke on the other important services provided by biodiversity including recreational, cultural and spiritual nourishment that maintain personal and social wellbeing. Therefore, she asserted, looking after biodiversity is an important task for all people.
She also explained about some of the main threats to biodiversity: loss, fragmentation and degradation of habit, the spread of invasive species, unsustainable use of natural resource, climate change, inappropriate fire regimes, change to the aquatic environment and water flows etc. She affirmed that it was the responsibility of every individual to preserve and protect our ecology. Participants of the campaign programme consisted of Police force, SHGs, youth and local leaders.
