Prof JK Patnaik, Vice-Chancellor of Nagaland University, inaugurated the Botanical Park at the university headquarters in Lumami on December 10. Present at the inauguration were Dr. Abemo, Registrar; Dr Albert Khizho, Finance Officer; Er Yanrenthung Ezung, Controller of Examinations; Heads of Departments; faculty members; officers; staff; and students.
Initiated earlier this year, the park aims to house rare and endemic plant species from Nagaland and the wider Northeast region. At present, it features rare varieties of banana, Zingiber species, and medicinal plants, along with flowering species introduced to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the site.
The park is envisioned as a recreational space for university employees, research scholars, and postgraduate students, offering a place to unwind after academic or administrative work. Its open spaces also provide an ideal environment for walking and outdoor activity. The indigenous plant collections are expected to be of interest to both researchers and enthusiasts, supporting study, conservation, and appreciation of biodiversity.
The park is also intended to contribute to the conservation of endangered and threatened plant species of Nagaland. Since its inception, it has been curated and supervised by Dr Neizo Puro of the Department of Botany, Nagaland University.
