The Ongpangkong Senso Telongjem Dimapur (OSTD) commemorated its 50 years anniversary on February 26 under the theme- Looking beyond the horizon. Hosted at the Senden Riju, Purana Bazar, Dr SC Jamir was among the invitees as a special guest and Rev Dr L Kari Longchar as the theme speaker.

In his address, Dr Jamir underscored the need to invest in the future rather than focusing too much on the past.

According to him, the Ao community today has  a greater tendency to dwell on matters that has passed, which in turn, has only served to limit intellectual growth.

This tendency, he said, should be replaced by discussing issues relevant to the present. “Our forefathers’ beliefs were relevant to the time and period they lived in. Like them, we also have to be relevant and sensitive to the affairs of the present, at the same time, keeping in mind the interests of the future generation is vital,” he said.

He added that the potential of the youth of today cannot be underestimated and as parents, he said, “Grooming and guiding them in the right path is a big responsibility.”

According to him, the Aos were fortunate enough to have been the first among the Nagas to have received the Gospel. However, he noted that things have not been going well over the years since and that it calls for deeper introspection “where we have gone wrong.”

Speaking on the theme, Rev Dr L Kari Longchar dwelled at length on the importance of social and spiritual transformation for a better future. He said that dogged resistance to change must be replaced by scientific temperament.

Along with sorting out internal differences, he said that making way to women empowerment and focusing on exploiting the available human resource would go a long way in transforming the society, he said.

Bullying tactics employed by bigger villages on smaller villagers, especially on matters of election, must also be done away with, he said.
