Nagaland Chief Minister Dr Neiphiu Rio graced the 2nd edition of Nerhema Organic Day-cum- Khuvie Nyi 2025 at Nerhema village under Kohima district on September 6.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Rio said that Khuvie Nyi (Festival) symbolized unity and peace amongst the community.
Together, we can achieve anything, he maintained.
Thanking the horticulture department and Nagaland Bio Resource Mission, Nagaland for collaborating with Nerhema village for this festival, he also called for sharing expertise with the villagers for a long-term sustainability of Khuvie Nyi.
The stalls, set up by Nerhema SHG in this festival, was supported by Nagaland State Rural Livelihoods Mission (NSRLM).
In today’s world, everyone become health conscious and looking for organic food, he said and stressed on the need to prioritize and intensify organic farming in the state.
With organic certification, one can sell the produce at the higher price, he said.
For advanced countries, they give importance towards healthy food but for us we focus on what is tasty, he said.
In this, Dr. Rio stressed on the need to focus on food which implies good for health.
Earlier, Dr. Rio inaugurated Multi- Purpose Building, which was funded by Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India and Local Area Development Programme (LADP) Iconic Project 2022-23.
Also speaking on the occasion, Ayieno Hibo, Director, Horticulture Department said that Khuvie Nyi brought people together through taste and tradition, adding that it was also a celebration for their (farmers) hard work and their contribution.
“We are ready to give value addition training programme in the near future,” she said,
Let us take pride in what is ours, our farmers, our land and our local crops, she added.Dr. Kruolalie Tsürho, Team Leader, Nagaland Bio Resource Mission said, “Khuvie Nyi is about the heritage, the health and the flavour and also the deep connection between the land and its people.”
He said that Khuvie has been our tradition, our custom and our medicine for generations, adding that the festival is a reminder of the importance of biodiversity, local farming and sustainable utilization of agriculture.
Let this festival be a seed of future innovation, cooperation and pride in our local produce, he added.
He also thanked the Chief Minister for the inclusion of Nerhema village in the Enhancing Landscape and Ecosystem Management (ELEMENT) Project, funded by the World Bank.
“This initiative is poise to generate significant economic prospects for forest-dependent communities through the proportion of forest-based products,” he said.
Kekhriengulie Theünuo said that the objective of Nerhema Organic Day cum Khuvie Nyi is to boost the economic position of the farmers and also to adopt the principle of “Back to root.”
Earlier, welcome address was delivered by Vingutuo Rutsa, chairman Nerhema Village Council while keynote address was delivered by Kiyasetuo Kengurüse, chairman organizing Committee.
The Multi- Purpose Building report was presented by Neiketouzo Kengurüse while vote of thanks was proposed by Sevilie Kerhüo, President Nerhemia Dzevi Houzha.
