Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh who returned to Imphal from New Delhi where he camped while signing the “peace agreement” between United National Liberation Front (UNLF) and the Government of India on Friday appreciated the people of Manipur for their unwavering support in bringing one of the oldest rebel groups on the “path of peace.”

Biren Singh returned to Imphal this afternoon. On his arrival at Imphal airport, the CM told the reporters that being able to bring the armed rebel group to the negotiating table is a significant step toward bringing peace in the State. He said that after over 60 years Manipur has succeeded in marching towards peace and “it was possible because of the unwavering support of the people that the rebel group was brought on the path of peace.”

“It would not be possible to bring them (UNLF) on the path of peace without the support of the people,” he said.

The CM lauded the leaders and cadres of the group on behalf of the people of the state. The signing of the “peace agreement” will help in restoring peace and normalcy in the state, he added.

Singh appealed to other rebel groups to come forward and hold peace talks so that permanent peace is brought about in the state.

Singh also lauded the Prime Minister of India and the Union Home minister while asserting that it was possible under the guidance of the two Central leaders. “I would like to congratulate and appreciate Prime Minister Narendra Modiji and Home minister Amit Shahji on behalf of the people of the state as well as from my side and my colleagues,” he said.

He further thanked Union Home minister Amit Shah for his “relentless” efforts towards bringing peace in the state as well as in the northeast region of the country.

The CM, however, refused to divulge the terms and conditions agreed upon between the rebel group and the Centre while signing the “peace agreement.”

Responding to a query on the matter, he said that it was “a little bit confidential”. “I cannot expose it right now. Time will tell you everything.”

Earlier, on his arrival at Imphal Airport, ministers and MLAs of BJP and other ruling parties extended a warm reception to the chief minister.

Later, the chief minister also attended a reception function held at BJP Manipur Pradesh office in Imphal’s Nityapath Chuthek. The event was attended by state BJP president A Sharda Devi, ministers and MLAs of the ruling party.

Organized by BJP Manipur Pradesh, the enthusiastic reception marked a positive moment following significant peace talks with UNLF.
