The Department of Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection (LM&CP), Tuensang, in collaboration with Government Polytechnic Sedem, organised a consumer awareness programme under the theme “Legal Metrology and Consumer Protection: The Journey Towards Viksit Bharat 2047” on September 9.

The programme, held at the GPST hall, was chaired by Alila Longkum, lecturer at GPST. In his welcome address, Principal Er Among Longkum highlighted the importance of educating students on consumer rights and responsibilities.

He explained that the department’s role lies in enforcing government regulations, particularly ensuring the accuracy of weights and measures in commercial use. He stressed that weighing machines in shops must be verified and approved by competent authorities, and reminded participants that proper labeling on products - including manufacturing dates, expiry dates, and clear pricing - is a legal requirement meant to safeguard consumers.

Meanwhile, the awareness programme was also held at Weshen Theological College on September 8.

The programme, chaired by Along Sangtam, sought to educate students and staff on their rights and responsibilities as consumers. WTC Principal welcomed the gathering and shared a brief history of the college, noting that it was formerly known as Imlong Theological College before being taken over by the Chang Baptist Lashong Thangyen (CBLT) and renamed. The name “Weshen,” he said, is derived from the Chang words Waebutobü and Shenshinge.

Key speaker C. Chollen spoke on legal metrology, clarifying that the department is tasked with enforcing laws and rules enacted by the Government of India. He emphasized the importance of the Legal Metrology Act, 2019, pointing out that weighing scales used in shops must be verified and approved by the central government. He further stressed the need for accurate labelling on products, including manufacturing dates and clear pricing, to safeguard consumers.

Another resource person, Herola, explained the legal process of filing consumer complaints and outlined the various rights guaranteed to consumers. She urged participants to be vigilant and informed while making purchases.

An interactive question-and-answer session allowed students and faculty to raise queries, which the speakers addressed. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Yemjong BN Chang, followed by a benediction.
