COVID-19: Longest gap from 12k to 13k in Nagaland but cases resurging

At 100 days, the gap between 1000 COVID-19 cases in Nagaland was longest from 12,000 to 13,000; however, the State has been witnessing a considerable spike in detection of cases this week. 

The State breached the grim 13,000-mark (13,003) milestone on April 24, 333 days since it reported the first COVID-19 case on May 25, 2020.

It was also exactly 100 days after the State crossed 12,000-mark January 12, 2021. 

According to database maintained by The Morung Express based on official records, cases began to decline sizably since last November as it also took 48 days to reach for cases to climb from 11,000 to 12,000. 

The State crossed the 11000-mark on November 26, 2020. 

As per the database, it took 57 days to cross the first 1000-mark on July 20, positivity surged thereafter and it took just 14 days to cross 2000 cases on August 3 and seven days to reach the 3000-threshold on August 10.

There was a dip in cases in the month of August and reporting an average of 25 cases a day, the State took 22 days to cross the 4000-mark on September 1.  

However, in September, there was another surge and it took 11 days to reach the 5000-mark on September 12. 17 days later, the State’s tally of COVID-19 cases crossed the 6000-mark on September 29. 

It took 11 days to cross the 7000-mark after which it took 9 days to reach the 8000 mark. It took another 11 days to reach the 9000-mark on October 31. 

On November 16, the caseload breached the 10000 threshold, after which it reached the 11000 mark on November 26.

Resurging trends 
There has been significant increase in number of cases since the start of April, particularly since April 19. 

For instance, till April 19, the State’s caseload was hovering at 12568. However, things took a dramatic turn thereafter. On April 20, the State reported 82 new cases, followed by 97 the next day and 53 on April 22. 

Another 89 cases on April 23 took the total tally to 12889. The caseload reached to 13003 when 114 cases were reported on April 24. 

The Weekly Bulletin issued by the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), Department of Health & Family Welfare, Nagaland on April 24 informed that the April 17-23 period saw the highest weekly surge since December 2020. 

Cases are maintaining a dramatic upward trend recent week. To put things into context, a total of 448 cases were detected between April 19-24, indicating that over half of cases between January 13 and April 24 (100 days) were detected last week. 

Meanwhile, on April 25, the State reported 180 new cases, the highest single-day spike in 2021 taking the total tally to 13183. According to State IDSP, out of the total, there are 679 active cases, while 12132 have recovered. 

As of 3:00 pm April 25, there were 88 deaths in the State while 10 were designated as COVID-19 patients but not “COVID-related” deaths.
