Kohima | July 13 : The second day of the “Moserbaer GTC School Chess Championship 2011” held on July 12 went on in full swing at the Guwahati Town Club auditorium here. The three-day long mega chess event saw some major upsets on the top boards as top seeded Rishideep Bordoloi of DPS Duliajan was defeated by Rituraj Borgohain of St Xaviers School Duliajan in the fourth round game and third seeded Dipu Pradhan was held to a draw by 14th seeded Debanga K Bhattacharyya of DPS Guwahati.
According to the Director GTC Chess Foundation Biswajit Bharadwaj, Debanga K Bhattacharyya defeated Pranjit Kalita of Gandhi Smriti School, Mangaldoi to prove his mettle again in the fifth of a keenly contested match on the third board. The top two table games in the fifth round ended in draws after a long fought battle of wits. On the fourth board Nitish Das of Faculty School Guwahati got the better of Aryan Sonowal of DPS Duliajan while Rishideep Bordoloi escaped another scare as of back to back defeat following he managed to squeeze a win against Divyanga Spondon Baruah of DPS Duliajan in a long fought game which lasted for three hours.
As was evident, the tournament having 15 international rated players besides many state players from across Assam, is interestingly poised after the end of fifth round as five players viz Nitish Das of Faculty School, Maheswata Kumar of Mangaldoi Town Higher Secondary School, Kaustav Kashyap Das of Srimanta Sankar Academy and Rituraj Borgohain of St Xavier Higher Secondary School Duliajan were leading the tournament with 4.5 points each. They were followed by a pack of nine players on four points each.
In the sixth round which was in progress at the end of the day two, Nitish Das of Faculty School, who is also a student of GTC Chess Foundation, played against Mahasweta Kumar while Kaustav K Das is facing Rituraj Borgohain on the second board. On the third board, Rishideep will try to salvage some lost glory against Debanga K Bhattacharyya who is already half point ahead of his opponent and in terrific form having already defeated to higher seeded players. Thus, the tournament is still wide open with four more rounds remaining and it will be interesting to see who claims the top spot eventually. The tournament will end on Wednesday July 13 evening with the prize distribution ceremony slated to be held at 8:00 pm onwards.
