World Environment Day was observed at the CBLT Multi-Purpose Hall, Tuensang, on June 5 under the theme “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.”

The programme was organised by the Tuensang Forest Division and Onou Foundation in collaboration with the District Administration, Tuensang Town Council, Agriculture Department, Horticulture Department, Life Care Society, Dolen Thangjam, and Baptist Thangyen Higher Secondary School (BTHSS).

Delivering the keynote address, Divisional Forest Officer-cum-DMU Head, Tuensang Division, Dr Prabhat Kumar highlighted “deforestation and pollution as major contributors to climate change.” Reflecting on the changing climatic conditions over the years, he spoke on the adverse impacts of environmental degradation and stressed the need for collective action to safeguard the environment.

He urged students and the public to reduce the use of plastic and encouraged tree plantation and proper care of saplings as practical steps towards building a greener and more sustainable future.

Deputy Commissioner Tuensang, Lithrongla Tongpi Rutsa, also addressed the gathering and emphasised “individual actions, however small, can contribute significantly to environmental protection.” She observed that “weather patterns, once predictable to previous generations, have become increasingly uncertain due to the effects of climate change.”

Highlighting the importance of responsible waste management, she drew attention to the challenges posed by improper disposal of sanitary waste and called for waste segregation at the household level. She further lauded the Government of Nagaland's decision to impose a one-year ban on nicotine-based food products, describing it as a positive step towards public health and environmental well-being.

As part of the celebration, painting and poem recitation competitions were conducted. The programme concluded with a plantation drive under the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign in and around the BTHSS campus. Participants planted saplings as a symbolic commitment to environmental stewardship and the collective effort to create a greener future.
