Dengue helpline launched in Nagaland amid rising cases

Kohima, August 9 (MExN): The Nagaland Vector Borne Diseases Control Program (NVBDCP) under the Directorate of Health and Family Welfare has launched a dedicated Dengue Helpline as cases of the mosquito-borne disease continue to rise across the state.

The helpline, which can be reached at +91 76309 32527, is now operational and aims to provide timely assistance, information, and resources to the public during this critical period. Staffed by trained professionals, the service offers guidance on dengue prevention and advice on when to seek further medical help.

In addition to the helpline, NVBDCP is intensifying its efforts to combat the outbreak through various measures. These include public awareness campaigns, entomological studies, fogging operations, and the distribution of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs).

A press release from the NVBDCP urged the public to take necessary precautions to protect themselves from dengue. Recommendations include using mosquito repellents, wearing long-sleeved clothing, and eliminating stagnant water around homes, as these are breeding grounds for the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the primary carrier of the virus.

The NVBDCP also highlighted the importance of community involvement in combating dengue. It encouraged to people observe "one dry day a week," where water in containers such as flower pot bases, empty vessels, coolers, and buckets is emptied into dry areas. This measure is crucial as dengue mosquitoes breed in stagnant, clean water, with eggs hatching within a week.

To further prevent the spread of dengue, residents are advised to keep all water-filled vessels and tanks tightly covered, dispose of rubbish like plastic cups and old containers, and regularly check their compounds for potential mosquito breeding sites.
