District Health Society, Mon launched the National Newborn Week at District Hospital, Mon.

Mon, November 17 (MExN): District Health Society (DHS) Mon launched the National Newborn Week (November 15 to 21) at District Hospital, Mon. The week-long observance aims to raise awareness about the importance of newborn care for child survival and development, with a particular focus on addressing the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance. This year the theme for the campaign is “ Optimising Antimicrobial Use to Prevent Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in Newborns.
During a brief gathering, Dr Supongmenla Walling, Chief Medical Officer, Mon said that the goal of the campaign was to ensure that both healthcare workers and families play an active role in safeguarding the health of newborns, whether at healthcare facilities or in the community. She also stated that the theme emphasizes the importance of careful antibiotic use during the neonatal period to prevent antibiotic resistance. This means that the theme emphasizes the implementation of essential maternal and child health services in healthcare facilities, as well as fostering strong connections with the community, to ensure that newborns not only survive but thrive in good health, she said. Lastly, she requested the general public gathered at the hospital to extend their cooperation to all the health care providers and ASHAs during community follow-ups of newborns throughout the National Newborn Week.
In commemoration of the day, Dr Supongmenla handed over a gift hamper to the newborns which included baby soap, diapers and juice for the mothers.
The campaign will be implemented in all the six blocks of the district for a week.
