A mega seminar for civil service aspirants-cum-launching of Alternative Learning Systems (ALS), India’s largest IAS coaching network, was held here at Town Hall on Saturday with Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur, Kesonyu Yhome, as chief guest.

The seminar with ‘Discover the difference’ as the theme is an initiative of Impact Hub Society.

Addressing hundreds of civil service (IAS) aspirants and students, the deputy commissioner said ‘passion’ in the most important trait a civil service aspirant must possess to achieve the ultimate goal. Yhome, the youngest IAS officers in the state, gave tips on how to prepare oneself for the most prestigious exam, IAS exam through UPSC. He said the success or failure depends on the individual alone and no one, be it parents or mentors, should be blamed for failure. “It is you yourself who is the biggest stumbling block and anything sabotaging your progress is you alone. Nagas have the knack for blame game and we always come up with excuses”, the DC said.

Yhome said an IAS aspirant must discipline and train his/her mind and not let the mind take control of an individual. He also said an IAS aspirant must possess self-confidence, positive attitude and determination and not waste precious time dwelling too much on one’s weaknesses. He further reminded the aspirants the adage ‘Failure is the stepping stone to success.”

Resource person of the seminar, ALS faculty member and renowned IAS mentor, Manish K Gautum, said the first thing an IAS aspirant should ask oneself is why he or she is opting for that service. Gautum said there are many students sit ting in the UPSC exam because of family or peer influence or pressure while some others are attracted by the recognition, respect, glamour and beacon light associated with the elite service.

But the most important drive to become and IAS officer, according to Gautum, is that the officer will get the opportunity to “touch and inspire” thousands of lives. “It gives opportunity for us to paint on a larger canvas. When you become a civil service officer, you can serve society with authority and resources at your disposal. This the fundamental difference between civil service and social service”, the IAS mentor said.

Gautum said the motivation to become an IAS officer should come from within oneself. He also gave valuable tips to the civil service aspirants and said to crack the IAS exam, a person should be possess qualities and traits including discipline, consistency, knowledge and requirements of the exam.
