DIMAPUR (MExN): The DMC has reiterated its plan of action to remove unauthorized footpath vendors to a more secure and uniform location inside the super market complex where the DMC has constructed CIGC buildings for vendors to sell their goods and commodities.
The area is under the Development Authority of Nagaland and had been leased out to the DMC. Previously the vast open area was not utilized for any purpose and the DMC decided to put the area into use seeing its vast potential.
The DMC targeted the footpath vendors who in a crowded place like Dimapur adds to congestion and relocated them to the super market area despite some refusals. Talking to The Morung Express, some foot vendors said, they were able to make more profits before, but on being shifted, they are now at loss with fewer customers.
But, they also felt that in the long run, they should be able to attract regular clients once people got familiar with the area. On this related issue The Morung Express spoke to Y. Vikheho Awomi, Chairman, DMC who expressed that whatever they were doing was in the interest of the people.
“To get used to change takes time, it’s a slow and gradual process. Their sell in the foot paths were unauthorized and thus illegal. What the DMC is doing is just providing a place for these unprivileged vendors who had no particular place to sell their goods. Their sell in the foot path also creates a lot of congestion and such activities speak a lot on the civic sense of the people. I know they are at loss now, but everything takes time. It is just a beginning for us, but if we have to bring about better change, we are compelled to take such actions” he said.
Most people whom this reporter talked to pointed out that initially there would be inconvenience and reluctance on the part of the vendors to shift, but all of them agreed that in the long run the initiative of the DMC would go a long way in transforming Dimapur into a more livable city.
