Doctors caution on ads with quick fix measures

Of late, hoards of advertisements on Ayurvedic ‘quick fix’ medicines have been appearing in newspapers and magazines. Creams promising removal of white patches, cure for skin diseases and female diseases, breast enhancement creams, etc. are crowding newspaper space. Most of these Ayurvedic medicines assure complete cure with no side effects. While it is not known if these products really work, it is important to understand whether they are safe for human consumption.

Dr. Tia, an Ayurvedic physician, says it is important to note whether the products are genuine or not. He believes that most of the products don’t carry the ISI mark or have a trade licence to enter the market. Understandably, most advertisements carry phone numbers and addresses of the dealers but are not readily available in the market.

Dr. Tia says that a lot of research and development is gone into producing Ayurvedic medicines and it is generally not advisable to procure medicines without the doctor’s advice. He also mentions that considering the content of the advertisements, it is possible that the mentioned physicians are ‘self made’, a common practice in places like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh which most ads refer to.

Dr. Tia also advises people not to try any product without establishing its authenticity. He also doesn’t believe in the effectiveness of such readymade products but says Nagas are by nature gullible and therefore cautions on its use. Other doctors around Dimapur also advise people not to try products, Ayurvedic or otherwise, without proper medical advice. Although they believe Nagas would probably not try them, they don’t rule out quacks using them as part of their treatment.

It is reported that most quacks procure such products for treatment and assure 100 percent cure and money back as well. ‘Though it is not to say that all advertisements are phoney, newspapers and magazines should also establish the authenticity of the products because some do look alluring,” one doctor says.
