Ending conflict through climate action

Observing International Day of Peace here under the theme ‘climate action for peace,’ several Scouts & Guides of Kohima district today took pledge to make a better world.


“I pledge for a better world,” “I commit to say No to Plastic,” “I am part of the global solution,” “I commit to a plastic free environment,” reads among the many placards during a peace march organized by Bharat Scouts & Guides, Kohima district to mark the day.


Several scouts and guides joined peace march from Old MLA Hostel Junction to PHQ junction, which was flagged off by Lithrongla Tongpi Rutsa, Additional Deputy Commissioner Kohima.


Kohima Smart City Development Limited (KSCDL) joint CEO Avelü Rüho also addressed the gathering at the brief programme held at Old MLA Hostel Junction.


Highlighting the significance of the day, Kiyakhrienuo Solo, District Organizing Commissioner (Guide) Kohima said that International Day of Peace was established in the year 1981 by the United Nation resolution.


Earlier, till 2002 it was celebrated on the 3rd Tuesday of September each year. After which the Assembly decided to celebrate International Day of Peace annually on September 21.


“It is a day to connect with each other for a common goal,” Solo said.


To celebrate this day, the UN decides a theme every year to recognize the effort of those people who have worked hard to end conflicts and to promote peace among the people of all nations.


The theme ‘climate action for peace’ focuses on the mind of combating climate as way to protect and promote peace throughout the world.


“This theme has been decided under the Sustainable Development Goal 13 "Climate Action", which is an immediate call for the greenhouse emission and to promote education on climate change,” she said.


The theme draws attention to the issues and importance of climate change as a way to protect and promote peace among the people throughout the world.


In view of   climate change, water crisis can become a threat to peace and as per the current situation of water crisis in the world, it can create war like situation among the countries, Solo said.


“It is the responsibility of all of us to make a change for the better world. Peace can be only achieved by taking strict actions. Thus, let us strive to make commitment today for a cleaner, greener environment,” she added.


The function was chaired by Khriesanyü Pienyü, district organizing commissioner (Guide) Kohima while vote of thanks was proposed by Petekhrienuo Tetso.
