ENSF, WSH caution on delimitation

Dimapur, March 21 (MExN): Eastern Nagaland Students Federation will ‘anticipate’ readjustment of assembly constituencies only when a seat is increased for the state and warns of consequences if otherwise. The Western Sumi Hoho also strikes a word of caution: who will be held responsible for any untoward consequences arising out of the ongoing delimitation uproar?

Opposing the ‘present delimitation draft proposal’ by the Delimitation Commission, the ENSF stated that as per the proposal, readjustment of district assembly constituencies is not acceptable under any form. “The federation will anticipate for readjustment of assembly constituencies only when a new seat is increased in the state” the ENSF through its vice president YP Chillio and joint secretary B Angam stated in a memorandum to the chairman of the commission.  It also requested the commission not to rename any constituency within the ENSF’s jurisdiction.

While ‘humbly’ requesting the commission to withdraw the proposed draft for Tuensang, Mon, Kiphire and Longleng, it warned of an own course of action if the demand is not fulfilled and the commission will be held responsible for any untoward incidents.

While not making any demands, the Western Sumi Hoho on the other hand also cautioned that the delimitation exercise should be undertaken prudently. Reiterating its earlier appreciation of readjustment on the basis of population, the Hoho took note that the present proposal has yet to be done with population ratio as the perimeter which, the Hoho stated, is for the vested interest of few individuals.

The WSH queried whether re-adjustment ‘has been proposed’ keeping in mind administration convenience or the ‘convenience of geographical point of view’ that the facts were taken into consideration before proposals were made.

The readjustment has been “very unfairly proposed” without taking into account the consequences and without the consent and consultation with any of the tribal Hoho, frontal organizations or the general public, the Hoho stated through its general secretary Akavi Zhimomi in a note. This is a gross violation of guidelines of the Delimitation Commission of India, the Hoho opined reminding that the commission states to take into account the public’s views.

“When all section of society is opposed to the proposed readjustments of seats, it is evident that the proposal is made without the consent (of the concerned) and (is) against the wishes of the people. The WSH will not succumb to the pressure nor remain silent spectator against anything that is against the will of the Naga public and therefore the Hoho under no circumstances agree to the proposed readjustment of seats” it stated and wonder who would be held responsible for any untoward eventualities.
