EPIC drive’s ‘forgetful cameras’ & memory issues

Dimapur, June 4 (MExN): The first phase of the photography campaign to issue Voters Identity Cards and preparation of the Photo Electoral Rolls ran into some computing problems, specifically unformatted storage disks apparently, because instructions in the User’s Manual were not read. Nonetheless, the first phase of the ambitious project went off smoothly and ‘successfully’ with Tuensang district topping the turnout.
A press release from the Election department received here today outlined the process and the events surrounding the campaign. “After initial isolated reports of mal-functioning of memory chips in a few polling stations, it was ascertained that the problems has occurred due to non-formatting of the new memory chips as per the instructions contained in the user manual of the camera,” Nagaland’s Chief Electoral Officer J Alam, IAS, explained in the press release.
All the DCs and DEOs were advised yesterday to format every new memory chip and to test the cameras thoroughly before the actual photography commences, the CEO stated. Fortunately, Alam explained, the problem has been resolved and corrective measures are being taken to prevent reoccurrence of such problems, he said.
34.8% voters out of 1, 59,357 voters from 184 polling stations have been photographed in the first three-days of the 25-day first-phase campaign. The highest response yet was from Tuensang with a 62% turnout, followed by Kohima with 45.8% and Mon with 44.5%. Wokha with 21.4% and Longleng district at 23.2% were the lowest. Reports are still being awaited from some more polling stations, Alam informed. The CEO is expecting that the campaign will pick up momentum in the coming days.
In the meantime the Election department has requested the Power department of the state to “increase supply of power” to remote districts such as Kiphire, Longleng and Peren  “as researching of batteries and functioning of communication and IT equipment is vital for success of the campaign.’ The department also requests the general manager of the BSNL to ensure ‘smooth functioning’ of landline and mobile communication facilities especially in the far-flung districts for proper communication.
Three nodal officers are touring all the districts and have already covered the district Phek, Kiphire, Tuensang, Longleng and Mon. Other districts are also in the itinerary and would be visited in a short while, Alam informed.
