Farmers from Doyapur village imparted training on livelihood improvement

Dimapur, March 10 (MExN): ICAR Nagaland Centre, Medziphema, Nagaland organised a day-long training on “Livelihood Improvement and Technological Empowerment of Tribal Farmers through Training and Input Support System” funded under TSP at Doyapur Village on March 6. 

Altogether 43 farmers participated in the training programme. The farmers were provided with vegetable seeds (Okra, cow-pea, bitter-gourd, cucumber and ridge-gourd), Maize variety HQPM-5, neem oil, bio-fertilizer and yellow sticky traps by the authorities, informed a press release.

Jyotish Barman, Scientist (Fisheries), in his welcome address briefed about the objective of the training and the necessity of diversification to maximise production per unit area through adoption of integrated farming system. He also gave an overview on possibility of adopting different fish species suitable for farming in Nagaland, especially the small species which have more nutritional benefits. Farming of local magur is another area on which he laid importance and urged some of the farmers to come forward and take-up magur breeding to solve scarcity of seeds. 

Dr Azeze Seyie, Scientist (Horticulture) delivered a detailed information on summer vegetable cultivation and their package of practices. She emphasised on the need for undertaking organic cultivation through application of bio-fertilizer and neem oil. Further, knowledge on insect and pest management, benefits of inter-cropping, farming system management were imparted to the farmers.
