Phek, December 16 (MExN): A three-day training programme on scientific backyard poultry management was conducted for farmers in Phek district from December 13 to 16, aimed at empowering rural livelihoods.
The programme, titled ‘Empowering Rural Livelihood through Scientific Backyard Poultry Management,’ was organised by the ICAR–Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Bareilly, in collaboration with the ICAR–Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Phek, under the aegis of ICAR–ATARI, Zone VII, Umiam.
Experts from KVK Phek and the ICAR–National Research Centre on Mithun delivered technical sessions on poultry waste management, scientific feeding, housing, disease control, hatchery management, and value addition of poultry products. Sessions also covered income generation in allied sectors and protected cultivation of horticultural crops.
Dr Sanjeev Kumar Singh, Senior Scientist and Head of KVK Phek, highlighted the importance of such programmes in strengthening the poultry sector. Dr MH Khan, Principal Scientist and Head, emphasised the role of poultry farming in ensuring rural livelihood security and nutritional improvement.
As part of the initiative, poultry chicks and starter feed were distributed to the participating farmers from Pholami Village. The training concluded with a farmer-scientist interaction, where participants shared field-level challenges, followed by the distribution of certificates.
